A NEW NEST
This project aimed to transform a cherished family home into an ideal retreat for its empty-nest owners. With a deep-rooted history in the house - one of them having grown up there and both raising their children there - the couple sought a dramatic change now that their children had moved out. They wanted to maximize the lake view, but the home's perpendicular orientation to the lake presented a significant challenge, as expanding towards the waterfront was not feasible due to lot restrictions.
In order to add a primary suite and attached garage, we converted a spare bedroom into the primary bath and angled the primary bedroom and garage addition to allow the primary suite breathtaking views of the lake and access to the outdoors. The kitchen and living areas were repositioned to fully embrace the lake's beauty and natural light. A recessed section of the hallway, featuring a Solatube skylight, alleviates the length of the corridor and introduces an unexpected architectural element. Given the clients' preference for casual dining, we eliminated the underutilized breakfast nook to accommodate a spacious kitchen island, creating a more functional and inviting heart of the home.
